Paula Pop, a rising 1930s starlet, lives in a black and white cartoon world. Her newfound success comes with a stylish apartment from her manager Sid, with the condition that she'll keep one special door locked.
Once Paula's alone, her apartment grows increasingly surreal and animated, joining her for a lively musical number, and as the music builds and the camera slides forward, its lens abruptly flings her against that special door. Recovering, she steps back, alarmed but curious, reaching for the handle. After all, why would Sid give her a key for something she shouldn't open?
She does, revealing three women's corpses hanging inside a colourful room. Horrified, she drops the key, the colours bleeding on it, stretching across to her body, raking her skin. The world violently alternates between monochrome and colour as the camera lunges and attacks. She tries to escape, struggling against it, the film restarting just to mock her. As she fights with this technicolour nightmare, Paula speaks directly to us, the camera, swearing to one day escape this murderous cycle.
